The Americas vacillated between episodes of darkness and light in the month of April. Despite instances of repression and attacks on freedom of expression across Venezuela, Nicaragua and Honduras, other countries moved towards fostering greater transparency - encouraged, in part, by organisations dedicated to the defense of human rights.

    The Americas have been experiencing hectic times thus far in 2019. Venezuela once again grabbed much of the attention, with protests in support of and against both the government of Nicolás Maduro and his opponent, Juan Guaidó. Meanwhile, in Honduras, the level of impunity in cases involving activists and human rights defenders took another critical turn.
