Journalist Veronica Guerin killed

On 26 June 1996, journalist Veronica Guerin was shot dead by two
men on a motorcycle as she was waiting outside a hotel in Dublin.
Guerin, who was a correspondent for the Irish daily "The
Independent", had recently obtained an exclusive interview with
"Mad Dog", the leading mafia chief in Dublin. For the past
several years, she had specialised in investigations into the
mafia and drug trafficking.

Recommended Action

Send appeals to authorities:

  • expressing grave concern over the murder of Veronica Guerin
  • urging that they do everything to ensure that those responsible
    are arrested and punished, and that they make public the progress
    of the investigation
