(RSF/IFEX) - According to RSF, on 7 January 1998 the Liberian Ministry of Mail
and Telecommunications closed Star Radio, a news and information station run
by the Swiss-based non-government organisation Fondation Hirondelle. Star
Radio is accused of illegally using two wavelengths, even though the
Ministries of Planning, Foreign Affairs and Information approved the setting
up of the radio, which began broadcasting on 15 July 1997 under the Liberian
interim government. Star Radio had been broadcasting since then without any
attempt from the authorities to close it.

Recommended Action

Send appeals to the President:

  • reminding him that Liberia has signed the International Convenant on Civil
    and Political Rights, article 19 of which guarantees the freedom to inform
    and to be informed
  • urging that Liberia fulfil its obligations towards the international
  • expressing concern about the recent deterioration of working conditions for
    journalists in Liberia and requesting that he do everything in his power to
    ensure that Star Radio resumes broadcasting
