(WAN/IFEX) - The following is a WAN press release:

President Responds to WAN Protest

The President of Lithuania has ordered an investigation into the activities of a security agent who was videotaped asking a reporter to provide "compromising information" about the newspaper Respublika.

In a letter and in a telephone call to the World Association of Newspapers and the World Editors Forum -- which have protested against an apparent harassment campaign by State authorities against the independent daily -- President Valdas Adamkus condemned the incident "as an unacceptable attempt to bring discredit upon the state authorities of Lithuania that should not be tolerated."
