A woman who worked as a newspaper distributor in Ciudad Juárez was shot to death on 31 January while driving a vehicle bearing the logo of the media company, reports the Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET).

Maribel Hernández, who worked as a distributor for the newspapers "El Diario" and "PM" for the past five years, was driving in the centre of Ciudad Juárez in a vehicle bearing the "PM" logo on the hood when a gunman shot at the car.

The police detained the suspect, Ramsés Robles Morales, who said he was a member of La Línea, a group connected to the Juárez drug cartel, and that he had received 3,000 Pesos (US$250) to kill Hernández.

"El Diario" management told CEPET that although they could not say that Hernández's death was directed at the media outlet, local journalists and media workers have received warnings about entering the area where Hernández was killed, which is known as a drug trafficking hub.
