Journalist arrested over article about torture of Hamas militants

Incident details

Khaled Al Amayreh

(Freedom House/IFEX) - On 26 October 1997, the Palestinian
Authority arrested journalist Khaled Al Amayreh after he
published an article on the torture of Islamic Resistance
Movement (Hamas) militants arrested by Palestinian security
forces, according to the Jerusalem-based Palestinian Human Rights
Monitoring Group (PHRMG). Amayreh was arrested by Palestinian
security services, a statement by the PHRMG said.

Amayreh, 41, had written an article in the 26 October edition of
the Arab-Israeli newspaper "Saut Al Haq Wa'l Hureya" in which he
reported on the torture of members of Hamas by Palestinian

Amayreh's article included quotes from prisoners taken from
prison interviews, the PHRMG said. Amayreh, a member of the
PHRMG, telephoned PHRMG director Bassem Eid before the
publication of the article and said he feared he would be
arrested over the expose, the statement said.

Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat, under pressure from Israel, has
launched a crackdown on Hamas, arresting around 80 Hamas members
since a pair of suicide bombings by the group in Jerusalem in
July and September of this year.
