Journalists arrested and released

Incident details

journalist(s)

detained

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF is worried by the arrest for more than an hour on Friday,
23 October 1998, in Gaza, of eleven Palestinian journalists, cameramen and
photographers, including some working for Reuters, Agence France Presse and
Associated Press news agencies.

The journalists were detained after having been arrested while they were
covering the reaction of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the spiritual leader of the
Islamist movement Hamas, to the signing of the Wye Plantation peace
agreement. Films and taped interviews were confiscated. The journalists were
told that permission from the police was required to cover political
matters.

On Saturday, 24 October, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called for a
strike in protest against these blatant restrictions on coverage of
political events. Hamas is a legal political organisation, and journalists
should be allowed to report the opposition's positions without any
censorship.
